They’re available in both Metric and Imperial and come packed with 9 different sized keys from 1.5mm to 6mm. The fold out cover becomes the handle and it can rotate a full 360. How more super-useful can you get? Where has this idea been all our lives? A bent steel hex-shaped handle (often called an Allen-key)…

Blood Tantalum – how our gadget habit affects the world’s war zones

[Photo from Open Anthropology] There’s a fascinating article in today’s Sydney Morning Herald on the illegal world-wide trade in minerals, specifically what has become known as blood tantalum. Most people would be aware of conflict or blood diamonds and how the profits from selling them are used to finance wars in strife-torn areas. As more and more international pressure is being brought to bear on this diamond trade, some of the rebel groups are turning to other minerals to finance…

Gruber Assist – the invisible electric bike retrofit

The Gruber Assist kit is a very cool electrical motor retrofit for standard bicycles which gives pedal assist power from an invisible drive train. The clever bit is to embed the 22 inch long motor and drive assembly into the frame by making it tubular, so instead of having to replace wheels, you just have to replace a seat pillar (video). The kit offers 200W of power, weighs a trifling 900 g and comes with a saddlebag housed NiMH battery (or LiION option)…

Novatel MiFi 2200 Personal Hotspot – probably not the best way to WiFi your world

The Novatel MiFi 2200 Personal Hotspot is nice and all, but we can’t help thinking that it doesn’t really offer anything more exciting than your own 3G mobile phone loaded up with a copy of JoikuSpot. Let’s think about this for a moment – a carrier tethered lump of hardware at $399.99 or a €15.00 bit of software which currently works with Symbian or 3 network handsets (Windows Mobile is catered for by WM WifiRouter).   We’re guessing it’s probably…

Tri-Field Meter Kit – Trekkie specs reach the real world…almost

The Tri-Field Meter Kit contains three different sensors which let you measure electric, magnetic and RF fields with the kind of coolness that Dr McCoy himself would envy. Some folk even think it can detect the presence of ghosts, but hey…we’re staying Casper agnostic, OK? All we know is those LED light arrays sure look purty. $74.95.  The technical applications are endless. Use it to detect radiation from monitors and TV’s, electrical discharges from appliances, RF emissions from unknown or hidden…

Baja Skimmer – jet ski meets airboat…water surrenders

The Baja Skimmer is a cross between one of those airboats you see skimming across the Florida swamps and a jet ski. It’s fast, fast with a top speed of around 60 mph and a cruise of 55 mph and it’ll keep you going for 2 hours at a time. It’ll ‘fly’ in as little as 7 inches of water, and comes with a ‘whisper fan’ which is apparently quieter than a jetski.  Baja Skimmer provides this rush while maintaining…

Solicall – freeware offers noise reduction and recording for your Internet calls

Solicall is a small freeware utility that offers noise reduction for your Internet phone calls. It works with most softphone products, but it won’t work on Windows Vista (only XP and 2000) which is a weird one. The idea is the software identifies your voice, maps its frequencies and then filters out all extraneous sound to let your words shine through in crystal clearness. It offers echo cancelling and call recording as well, which is nice. To use it with…

Sealed for life chain, suspension system, three speed gearing and a price tag of £1,158.00.
